Transparency - Empty
The standing figure sculptures of the Archaic period in Greece encapsulate movement. The expression of the face shows a smile that is also seen in the Buddhist statues of the Asuka period in Japan. I find this form, which is simple yet conveys a clear sense of life, very attractive. In my search for new developments in my work, I have layered ambiguous expressions and forms onto human figures. Because the human figures I am interested in have expressions and postures that are not limited to a single emotion, but are on the borderline between different emotions. This experiment resulted in an increase “Empty” compared to my previous work (Optical Illusion), and created 《Transparency》 at the boundary between the inside and outside of the sculpture.
